The rapid breathing in DKA is not anxiety.
It is compensation.
Patients with diabetic ketoacidosis develop metabolic acidosis from accumulation of ketoacids. To defend pH, the respiratory system lowers PaCO2 through deep, rapid ventilation.
This is Kussmaul respiration.
The patient is using minute ventilation as a buffer system.
